The orb-generating cards of the Defect are balanced around the fact that you will be able to take advantage of the orbs for the following turns. Yeah the energy/draw aspect of it is the strongest part of it, but you should not underrate the trade-off of playing it unupgraded because the orbs you are sacrificing don't come from nowhere, they are there because you've invested cards and energy to get them.
